Mr. Country 11-11-01

The Sir was a respectful address to those who received some education in the old days. In the folk custom of southern Hubei, there was also the appellation of the Sir, and the earliest address was Shushi, namely the rural teacher. The village ran the elementary school, also was called the elementary academy. The elementary academy was exactly to start the academy of Confucianism. Therefore, Shushi was called the master, and the students were called Confucian scholars.

Shushi taught the national academy, and was the orthodox Mr. National Academy. It was natural for the person who was called. However, there are cases that it is not proper to call a person Sir, and the fortune teller was one example.

The fortune tellers and the farmers look the same but differ in the spirit. Both of them speak the same dialect slang, but what is strange is that upon the fortune teller stretching out their hands, they would conquer the farmers. Whoever gives birth to a son invites the fortune teller. The fortune teller reports the son’s age and time of birth, watches the child’s forehead and mandible and has a choke with their long nails. Those fortune tellers who has beard stroked their beard, holds the tea and sips it several times, with narrowed eyes, saying calmly: “Your son has a bulge ding forehead and a round face, and the up matched the sky, and the low suited for the earth,” he pauses and stresses: “That symbolizes a wealthy and powerful fortune!” What the farmer takes a fancy to and waits for is exactly the propitious words, and the passionate time is lit up by the old but lovely guy in the farm yard.

It is heard from an old man that he is destined to cultivate the farm, because a blind fortune teller said he was born with hoes on their shoulders. Looking at the old man, I remained speechless. The art of watch, smell, ask and feel of the life in art is as the same as that of the Chinese medicine. A blind man couldn’t watch but could smell sweat mixed with the inferior, and couldn’t open his mouth to ask but could feel that coarse cracked skin and palm with cocoons. What it showed if it didn’t showed you came out with hoes on their shoulders?

In the country, who is called the Sir but is far from the old address Sir is also Mr. Fengshui.

Since the ancient times, people have been very exquisite on the living environment. And the emerging of Mr. Fengshui in the country has made the “knowledge” of living covered with mystery. Therefore, the forefather showed more respect to Mr. Fengshui who held a compass and watched everywhere, of course. According to legend, there was a ministry councilor choosing the place that backing mountains, facing water and sun in the green mountains and rivers and built houses and yards. When the new house was built up and the ministry councilor prepared to decorate the house, Mr. Fengshui, turned up and watched the front and back of the house for three times, browed, silent. The ministry councilor gave the silver to him and hoped him to make adequate guidance advice. Mr. Fengshui took up the brush pen and put down four sentences. Having a look at the sentences, the ministry councilor scared out in cold sweat throughout the body. The reason was that what Mr. Fengshui wrote down was that a ruthless wind bowed from the river in front of the door, several black mountain heads appeared at the back of the house, the luck and wealth couldn’t benefit the offspring, and the generation couldn’t act the high and mighty official…

The poor people living at the bottom of the society in the old days hoped that good Fengshui could bring good fortune and if it couldn’t be realized in this life, it was hoped to be come in the next life, and hoped for the offspring. Thus, the base of the house of the living was up to the Fengshui, and that of the dead was more up to Fengshui. In order to quest for a good patch of graveyard for the dead people to bless the offspring, some should sell fields and children. However, the offspring couldn’t be protected but the family tragedy has shown.

A tragic era produced many tragic elements. Either Mr. Fortune Teller or Mr. Fengshui is one of the elements. The tragic times have gone and the tragic elements have disappeared, and it is the time when the earliest and realest Sir –the rural teaching sir should feel the spirit high and air clear!
