The Legend of the Chongzhen Emperor (Tongshan County, Xianning City)

Legend has it that in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Li Zicheng, a Chinese leader of peasant uprising, reached the city gate of capital Beijing with his attacking army, and the city was under siege. Scared to death, the Chongzhen Emperor of Ming Dynasty was at the end of his rope, so were his officials at court. Hopelessly, they looked at each other and couldn’t cease sighing.

Unsettled, the emperor dressed up as a civilian, wandering in the street to scrutinize the real circumstances in that very period. Along the way, he felt relieved since every encounter was greeted with joy instead of fears resulting from looming catastrophe. At an intersection, he caught sight of a fortune teller booth and suddenly got attracted and went over. He politely bowed, saying to the fortune teller:”Sir, I want you to divine something by means of character. ”

The fortune teller, remained head down, said:”What is it about?”

  “Current political situation.”

  “Well, show me a character.”

What character should I use? Upon seeing the sun set, the emperor thought for a while and uttered a “酉”(pronounced “you”), a Chinese character which means a period ranging from 5 to 7 p.m. Then the teller started to decode it:”It is the upper part of “尊”(in Chinese, it refers to the noble group), the missing of the under part “寸”(means “a piece of land” in Chinese)makes it disintegrated and thus indicates imminent catastrophe of our emperor, his Majesty might have no place to settle himself!”

The emperor got so scared at the teller’s words, sweating all over. Hurriedly, he wittily changed his original account of the character:”No, no, I just said ‘有’(also pronounced “you” in Chinese).” “Nothing changes. It consists of the left part of ‘大’and the right part of ‘明’,each of which is torn apart in this way, so this nation is really doomed!” (“大明”as a whole means “the Ming Dynasty”.)

Gloomy as he was about the future once again, he did not give up trying:“You misunderstood, I was saying ‘友’(also pronounced “you”),the friends!” This time, he, without exception, was responded by bad luck: “See, it is a extended form of ‘反’(means “rebel against”)It shows that when rebels initiated a rise in rebellion, here comes a transformation of a dynasty.”

The three characters all gave undesirable implications, which nearly frightened him out of his life. The fortune teller did not meet with the emperor before, so he felt bewildered by his trembling: “What is it that makes you so scary? Now, leader Li Zicheng is going to occupy capital Beijing and establish a new regime, our civilians are very delightful for this!”

As he looked around, it was indeed a sea of cheerful people, dressing up as if celebrating some grand festival. He sighed sorrowfully: “ Alas, this is the common aspiration of my people, and this is my fate!” Returning to his imperial palace, he mounted the Coal Hill unnoticeably. Then with a ribbon ringed on a heavily bent tree, he hanged himself.
