The Story of Feng Jing NO.10] Not Calling on the Prime Minister
http://English.xianning.gov.cn 11-02-15

When Fu Bi(1004—1083),a prime minister in feudal China, was at his term of office, Feng Jing, Fu Bi’s son-in-law, asked for instructions to be an official of local government to avoid sharing a political arena with him. Since in the past, people in such a circumstance would have been slandered for using public office for private gain. Feng had been the magistrate of Yangzhou and Jiangling. Afterwards he was appointed as Shi Du Bachelor(a rank four government post), a picket in charge of criminal cases in Beijing, a scholar of the imperial academy and the magistrate running Kaifeng, a prefecture-level city in east-central Henan province, Central China.

After returning to capital Beijing, for several months, Feng Jing had not called on Han Qi, an old friend of Fu Bi, to pay his respects, which upset Han very much. So Han grumbled to Fu about Feng’s aloofness and pride. Hence, Fu asked Feng to pay a visit out of politeness. At Han’s mansion, Feng demonstrated his deliberateness:”For inferior people like me, it is improper to call on you, a prime minister of nobleness. Indeed, I didn’t visit you for the sake of your reputation!”

The fact that Feng married two daughters of Fu successively (the elder sister died, so the younger one, who admired Feng also, married him later), many people believed, illustrated that his reliance on bigwigs. Yet, his smooth official career was closely related to his competence in handling affairs and magnanimousness in treating people. This was, in part, the reason why he was on bad terms with the then ruling prime ministers. Emperor Renzong of Song and Emperor Shenzong of Song, however, did not relegate him; instead they often elevated him to higher positions and protected him as much as they can. Emperor Zhezong of Song intended to employ Feng, who was at that time in his twilight years. Just as the minister Fan Zuyu of Song Zhezong Dynasty put it:”During his term at office, Feng had been at odds with Wang Anshi, and then Lu Huiqing. But his ethical practice of impartiality was highly commended by the late Emperor Shenzong of Song.”
