When the Bell Chimes (Tongcheng County of Xianning)

Once upon a time, there was a couple in Longping Village, Tongcheng County. Hsubao, a husband of sloth, got into the habit of gambling. The wife pled with soft words but failed to change his mind. To make matters worse, he began to beat and kick her. Later on, the wife gave birth to a daughter and Hsubao naturally felt unhappy about it. Since traditionally, Chinese parents prefer boys, rather than girls, to carry their family lines, and eventually when a girl got married, she would live with her husband’s family without taking care of her own parents. With this conservative idea in mind, Hsubao refused to take any further part in looking after them and continued to indulge himself in gambling.

For nearly half a month, he immersed himself in gambling. When he finally came back home, only to find his wife was on the verge of death and passed away before long. Yet, he did not regret at all. On the contrary, he sold off his own daughter and family property in exchange for money, which enabled him to have lingered in gambling den, year in and year out, ten years or so have elapsed in a flash. He was still obsessed with that place.

In a twelfth lunar month, Hsubao lost all his possessions barring an unlined garment on him. So on the Eve of the Lunar New Year, when others were celebrating their family reunions, he was forlorn. Cold and hungry, he looked like a stray dog. At his wits' end, he shamelessly turned to his married daughter, who, upon seeing her cruel-hearted father at the door, awoke by a mix of hatred and sympathy and kept wailing. His son-in-law, reluctant to sadden his wife, let him in. However, nobody ever talked to or even gave him a gracious greeting, he was obviously left out. For a moment, he thought his granddaughter called him so he responded and stood up: a little girl came over and cried “Grandpapa, time for New Year's Eve dinner!”, but soon it turned out that she was talking to her paternal grandfather. Disappointed and ashamed, he left quietly after the reunion dinner.

From then on, Hsubao abandoned gambling and stood on his own feet to sustain himself. Starting from small businesses, his trade was soon gaining momentum, thanks to his hard-working and endurance of hardships along the way. Only within two years or so, he became the richest man in Longping area. Later on, he remarried and his twilight years witnessed many offsprings for his company. To prevent them from going astray like himself, he had a bell cast hanging at the door. Each morning, he got up early at regular time and rang the bell, urging them to do farm work. To this day, the bell still remains.
