The Legend of Lin Tse-hsu (Puqi, the ancient name of Chibi City)
http://English.xianning.gov.cn 11-01-06

In his previous existence, Lin Tse-hsu , the magistrate of a county with Hsu as his family name, lived in Nanzhuang, which situated in Puqi, outside the north gate of old city wall. His excessive immersion in study led to his poor health and premature death, which is really regrettable. Legend has it that he died and was reborn into a body of a child, who appeared in Lin Village, the south-east province of Fujian. Since the king of hell, was snoozing at that very moment, so the Five-Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness, which offered to the dead to wipe out their past, missed its target this time.

When Lin Tse-hsu grew into a 12-year-old boy, he returned to Puqi, where he spent his previous life, as a magistrate of the county. Along the way, four bearers teased him deliberately and swayed the sedan chair from side to side, for the simple reason that Lin was just a small boy. One sings and the other joins in: “raising the sedan chair onto the shoulder as if raising an empty box; swaying it from side to side as if bearing a blade of grass swinging.”

Upon backing to the county yamun, the ancient county-level government, he had two imperial guardian lions installed in the sedan chair, and when he got on the sedan once again, 150-kilogram weight put these bearers under such great pressure that they could barely unbend their backs. From then on, nobody dared to belittle Lin Tse-hsu .

His so called wife of previous life was still living and in good health when he came back. He called her pet name the instant he saw her and was rebuked as rudeness. To explain what had happened to him, Lin reefed off many a book he read, many essays he wrote, bookcase which have stored those stuff and where it was. He even gave an exact account of the direction which his former grave faced. The elderly lady, filled with mixed feelings inside, couldn’t help weeping. Thereupon, Lin installed her in yamun and took good care of her ever after.

In this life, it is said that his family name changed into Lin so that he named himself ”Lin Tse-hsu ”, meaning “Lin” was originated from “Hsu ”. Many year later, Lin, as the designate official, was assigned by the then Emperor Tao-kuang of Qing Dynasty (1782 - 1850) to destroy opium at Humen, a historically famous town in the southern province of Guangdong, and burned over 20,000 crates of opium, which had been brought in by British, at a stroke. Therefore, he went down in the anti-British history as a national patriotic hero.
