Working in countryside, being an ordinary worker and an instructor in writing…Chen Yingsong entered the palace of literature step by step and finally became a resounding writer.
How should Xianning grass-roots writers find their way of literary creation? Chen Yingsong said that writers were not distinguished by cities or countries they lived in. Mao Dun, Shen Congwen and many other well-known writers, they all came from small places, but their works are classic in literary circles. Take Shen Congwen's book the Border Town for instance; what was described in it was his living town which now has become a tourist resort.
Chen Yingsong also told the reporter that it was very important to broaden their horizon if they wanted to elevate the writing lever. Only by going outside to get closer to the nature and life, could they find some eternal themes and write excellent articles. Take Xianglin’s Wife and Runtu for examples, they were small characters in Lu Xun's works, but they reflected characteristics of a society and a time, which was a good example of the writing skill “having the major aspect
of each problem in mind and solve it in details.” When talking about broadening the view, the reporter immediately thought of Chen's experience of travelling around over 40 towns and villages and 80 countries in Jinzhou in one year to investgate the life of the disadvantaged.
The prerequisite is to wider the view and reading good books is also very important.” Said Chen Yingsong,” With the development of society, writing has become a specified profession that needs a large amount of skills and experience, constant learning and refining. A good writer can't develop without extensive reading.Reading is not what we know in normal sense, such as reading newspapers and popular books, but those great books that can affect our minds. Reading needs the support of life experience and reading skills, that is to say, we should know how to read.”
