“Hearing Association for Science and Technology would organize experts to give lectures the day before yesterday, I came over early this morning.” Li Yuandong said on February 22, a Chinese chestnut grower from Chengfeng Village of Wuli Town of Tongcheng County. As soon as he finished the breakfast, he rushed to Zuogang Village, the site of Chinese chestnut demonstration garden.
There was a sea of people in the garden that day when Li arrived. Nearly a hundred Chinese chestnut growers from the village of Chengfeng, Jishan and Xiangshi were discussing with experts.
“I have more than 100 acres of Chinese chestnut, is there any knacks on bud grafting technology?” Li Yuandong asked.
“If there are more than two leaf buds under the grafting part, you can cut on the grafting mouth position; If not, you should cut with 2-4 leaf buds left. ” self-taught expert Wang Lianming explained in detail.
When asked about chestnut storage method, self-taught expert Li Xiuming replied patiently:”Because of the Chinese chestnut’s big water content, breathing in high strength, a lot of heat, if not dealt with timely, they may rot easily. The approach is to choose cold cool ventilated place, spreading the chestnut bract slightly, and the thickness of 20-30 cm is appropriate……”
When it came to the problem of breeding worms, rotten or broken, the self-taught experts set one Chinese chestnut tree, for example, to give farmers a detailed explanation, and teach them the technical details about seedling cultivation, transplanting, grafting, fertilizer or pest control.
Wuli Town has a good reputation as the hometown of Chinese chestnut, with 5,000 acres of chestnut forest, producing 500,000 kilograms annually, generating more than 3 million of income.
The deputy secretary of the party committee Hu Jianping who is in charge of agriculture, said the activists of spreading science and technology to rural areas issued nearly a thousand copies of the scientific publicity material, benefiting more than 16000 people.
