Yu Jiaqiao Middle School (Chibi) Cultivating Versatile Students 09-04-24

  Education is to cultivate talents. Its ultimate purpose is to turn out versatile personnel with ambitions, knowledge, good discipline and manners who can adapt to society and survive in the stiff competition. Based in the rural area, Yu Jiaqiao Middle School, with fine traditions and practices, has produced many a brilliant man that contributes to China’s economic development and other lines of work. Currently, there are 40 members of the faculty and staff, and 642 students, including 539 boarders. The campus occupies an area of 24,426 square meters, with a floor space of 8,621 square meters.

  In recent years, the School, led by President Song Shaohua, has stuck to the guideline of working safely, teaching and research as the basis, and producing qualified students as its ultimate goal. Students are taught based on their own characteristics; scientific management has been conducted; tasks are carried out step by step, thus scoring remarkable results in high school entrance examination. In 2007, 139 students sat through the exam, of which 22 were admitted into key high schools; in 2008, 98 participated with 15 admitted into key high schools. The School has successively won such titles as “advanced working unit” of Chibi City, “advanced education unit in moral education”. Through improving guidelines and scientific management, it has been striving in the path of healthy and steady advancement.

  First, the school intensifies management in a people-oriented manner, constantly putting the safety of students at the top of the agenda. Safety stands as the fundamental guarantee of carrying out education for all-round development and improving the quality of education. Considering that the school is situated in a remote rural area, the leadership has been fully aware of the importance of “safety first”. Led by Chibi Education Bureau, it has made conscientious efforts in safety work, removed safety concerns timely, and kept a zero-accident record for 23 years.

  The School has been improving job responsibility system in safety work with a detailed “six regulations” : the management of guards and students coming in and out of school, company in dormitories, patrol around and outside the campus, the noon break and so on. Four liability statements were signed and carried out between the school and the academic administration, the office of moral education, the logistics service and teachers.  Besides, liability statements on safety were signed with every student and his or her parents. In this way, a safety network has been formed.

  Safety education and work has been carried out with the former as the guideline and the latter the key. Firstly, Publicity is improving. Each week, shortly after they finish class, students are asked to ensure their own safety by the standard of “stand, look both ways and pass the road”. A roll call is done before every outdoor activity; during and after it, students are sent back to the School with uniformed arrangements. School presidents are regularly invited to give sessions on law, safety and health, which total no less than 40. In 2008, the school authorities launched lectures on 4 safety topics, namely, “prevention of fire, water, and lightening”, “three goodbyes and one keeping-off”, “prevention of nuclear, bio- and chemical weapons” and “prevention against schistosomiasis”. Secondly, blackboard newspaper, school radio and psychological consultations are brought into full play to spread knowledge concerning safety and health. In 2008, there were altogether 90 issues of blackboard newspaper, over 90 essays, and more than 500 psychological consultations. Thirdly, a safety warning system was set up. After “5.12” Wenchuan Earthquake, the School organized modal exercises concerning self-aid and emergency evacuation for multiple times. At the alarming, all the students and staff evacuated from classrooms and gathered at the designated spot, which cost over 3 minutes before but only 50+ seconds later. Fourthly, food, health and sanitation are regulated more strictly. A physic examination is conducted each term for employees at school canteens and stores, who are required to obtain health certificates for work. Any issue about health and sanitation is timely handled. Fifthly, more care is taken of personal safety and accommodation. In 2008, the School demolished 20 dormitories for the faculty and staff that had been deemed as the most dilapidated and invested more than 1.7 million yuan constructing 3260 square meters of turnover houses for them temporarily. Meanwhile, with the support of the provincial headquarters of lightening prevention, lightning arresters were installed for teaching buildings, office buildings and student dormitories.

  Second, the awareness has been raised and the theme more prominent by sticking to the aim of improving teaching and research. The quality of teaching lies at the root of the development of the school. Under the circumstances of a declining number of register and the popularity of seeking education in towns and cities, the school authorities, in order to retain the source of students and running  a better institution, are committed to the objective that is student-oriented, moral-based and quality-ensured. Great efforts have been made in daily teaching and research to make sure of a growing proportion of students entering schools of a higher grade, thus promoting the school reputation.

  Management over conventional teaching is strengthened by strictly operating with a series of systems. Firstly, a more stringent supervision system. Every class has one staff member to attend to and supervise. Reports come out in time to address misconducts and inadequacies, and praise models. Secondly, a school-based training system. To render class teaching more effective, teachers are regularly organized on study tours and other activities such as resource sharing and delivery of education to the countryside. Thirdly, more emphasis on the quality of teaching. Apart from examinations by the superior authorities, the School makes regular assessment for teachers and rewards those with outstanding achievements. Fourthly, the instruction office deploys personnel to take inspection rounds to intensify discipline by recording the teachers that are late or absent for class or depart earlier than required. In this way, teachers’ conducts are regulated and improved. By referring to the inspection records, excellent classes are commended while those with behaviors that fail to meet the professional ethics are punished. In the monthly and mid-term inspections, such teachers as Ma Yihong, Zhu Yuchun won the approval by their nice preparation for class, a proper attitude to checking students’ homework and giving measures for improvement.

  Classes are to be even more efficient. Born out of the latest development, this concept calls for more efficient education in each session. Firstly, the concept of “effective class” should be formed in every teacher’s mind to substantially promote the effectiveness of each class. Secondly, the leadership has been strengthened for better management. Based on the study of it in 2008, the concept continues to be learnt with notes and reflection made. Thirdly, checks on the implementation of “effective class” are conducted on a regular basis. Leaders in charge of education and teaching pay regular visits to the site of “effective class”. Fourthly, a system of reward and punishment was set up, with rewards for prominent teachers in successfully carrying out the concept and criticism and wage reduction for those who make poor results. By so doing, classes are more efficient, and the concept of “effective class” can find its way in the long run.

  Third, priority is given to educate people by scientific methods. The ultimate goal of promoting education is for all-round development, the basis of which is to produce students that have ambitions, good morality and discipline, a right outlook on life and values. At the same time, the School attaches importance to boost the quality of its teaching staff.

  Ethics of teachers are also given emphasis in nurturing students’ good behaviors. In order to urge the teaching staff to act as models in ethics, three measures have been taken. One, a set of standards is set to remind every teacher of the importance of his or her work. Each year there is a one-week training program. Each term there is an assessment joined by students and the general public. Two, a selection is launched for students to choose their “favorite teachers”. Three, for violation of disciplines, there is ethic education instead of name calling, with teachers pointing out the danger in students’ mistakes. Thereby, they are more reassured, confident and ambitious. 

  Efforts are made to let students become versatile. For them, dreams are the driving force. For one thing, a decent outlook on life needs to be cultivated. On the one hand, the headteacher should serve as a modal with a caring heart to acquaint them with the importance of getting along with peers. On the other hand, students are asked to seek breakthroughs according to their own characteristics. They should understand that society needs talents from all lines of work and that they can succeed later in life by improving their quality. In addition, interaction is to be increased between teachers and students, which can help students fully exploit their potential and achieve better results.
