Dozens of black storks finding food were filmed by shutterbug Zhou Zhian from Chibi near Chibi Fangshiwan Bridge on March 24th.
On that day, Zhou Zhian was collecting works on the beach near the Fangshiwan Bridge when he accidentally found the group of black storks. Then he used a telephoto lens to record rare pictures of foraging, soaring, and playing. "This shows that the ecological environment of Chibi is getting better and better," said Zhou.
About 3,000 black storks remain in the world, with less than 2,000 remaining in China. It's known as the "giant panda among birds" because of its extremely small number. Black storks usually live in wetland ecosystems such as rivers and lakes, feeding on small fish, amphibians and aquatic insects. They have high requirements for habitat environment and is one of the important "indicator species" of wetland ecosystem.
"The appearance of black storks may be closely related to the measures of wetland restoration and fishing ban actively implemented in Chibi in recent years," Chibi forestry department experts confirmed that black storks usually live in wetlands away from humans. In fact, they already spent the winter in Chibi last year, and only recently captured by photographers. The Chibi Wildlife Protection Station has stepped up patrols in the area and called on the public to watch birds in a civilized manner to avoid disturbance.
In recent years, through ecological corridor construction, biodiversity protection and other projects, Chibi has attracted a variety of rare birds such as oriental white stork, long-billed plover, water pheasant and white crane. (Xianning Daily/Wang Qifeng)
